bullet  General Notes:

Left Ireland for New Zealand 10-Oct-1881.

According to the Public Record Office Victoria (http://proarchives.imagineering.com.au/) John Moore Abbott, aged 65, arrived in Melbourne in January 1882 aboard the Rodney (Port B, Fiche 399, Page 2). Travelling with him were Mary Jane Abbott, aged 60, Eleanor Abbott, aged 32, and Hugh Hamilton Abbott, aged 29.

According to records the Rodney was quite a ship:
An iron full-rigged ship built in 1874 by W. Pile & Co., Sunderland. Dimensions: W. Pile & Co., Sunderland 235'6"×38'4"×22'6" and tonnage: 1519 GRT, 1447 NRT. Equipped with a lion figurehead. Chartered by Shaw Savill carried first class passengers only. She had bathrooms with hot and cold running water, a smoking room for the men, Lavatories in all cabins.

The length of the trip would of been 75-85 days.

The family then travelled to Auckland aboard the steamer Rotorua, arriving 30th of January 1882. According to the New Zealand Herald 31-Jan-1882 she arrived with 30 passangers in steerage and 13 English Cricketers. John Moor Abbott is listed in the Address to Sir George Grey. The Address to Sir George Grey was for his '74th Birthday 1886' on the 14th April 1886, in Auckland N.Z. All the Signatories are reproduced on an index Fiche and the Central Auckland Library has a copy. (sorry I don't have access) Information includes Name, Signature and supposedly the date that the person arrived in the Colony. The arrival date could be 'Date of Birth'; date of Disembarkation from incoming ship; or some other date indicating when the person 'settled' in Auckland.
