Born in England and sent to the best schools by his paternal family he followed his mother to Australia when she left in his teens.
He grew to manhood in the outback of Australia, moving with his mother to Kings Cross when her partner (James Cook) died, living in the pawn shop she owned and ran.
He fell in love and married a poor, illeterate, jewish girl from Kings Cross. They lived with his mother in the Kings Cross pawn shop for a while but their life was made very difficult.
They eventually escaped to New Zealand where they remained for the rest of their lives (Auckland). First living in Mt Eden and then Parnell.
He was a remmittance man who was supported by his paternal family up until the end of the first world war, when the money dried up.
He was a talented artist and story teller. A charming man of upper class english background in a lower class enviroment.
He became an alcoholic and eventually drank himself to death. Drinking Meths when he could no longer afford spirits.
